Cornation results

244 out of 251 finishers
Swim (1000m):245 29:50
Bike (24km): 229 1:05:24
Run (8km): 247 1:03:35 7:57 (avge pace/km)
Overall time: 2:38:48

Same results as last years 3 triathlons, ranked highest on the bike and lowest on the run. I usually do a little better on the swim, but the eight people in a lane with no staggered start made it tough to find a rhythym.

Overall, they are certainly not the speediest of results but I'm happy with how I did.

Coronation Tri

Coronation tri was today. The goal for today was to have a stronger run. Last year in all 3 of my tris I had to walk a lot on the run. I think I achieved my goal. I still don't think I'm ready for GWN fit, but I did have a stronger run than last year.

Full race report:
Friday-went for package pick-up, which was a total waste of time since they didn't have the shirts or anything. They gave me my swim time and heat (couldn't they have just emailed that or included in the pre-race letter?). They said we would get the shirts on the morning of the race. I had someone with me to hold my stuff, but I wasn't sure what everyone else was supposed to do with their shirts? Lucky for us, the package pick-up for the Blackfoot Ultra was at the same place so we had to be there anyway. Then drove to get my bike checked. They were pretty thorough, except they missed a tear in my tire that Lawrence pointed out so I had to get a new tire. Came home and practiced putting it on.

Sunday- got up at 5am (tris always have really early starts). I felt crampy and didn't want to eat but I forced down a bagel. I had gotten all of my stuff together the night before, but had forgot to put my goggles in the box. Now I know why I like to do it early. Got there around 6:30 and racked my bike. Went for body marking, and there was a long line-up. Waited for a while until they came by and said you could go to the front if you had a 7:45 swim time. Got my shirt (very nice!) and body marking done. My stomach was still really unsettled.

There was a lot of confusion getting seeded for the swim. They ended up joining us with another lane so we would have 8 people. We tried to go in order of our times but it looks like some people really don't know what their time is since one girl said she was 35mins and she lapped me. For the start they just scanned all of our chips one after the other and said "go". No gap between people! It was impossible to try and get any rhythym with all of these people swimming at different speeds. After a couple of laps we got into a flow, until some guy doing breast stroke passed me and then slowed down. It's really tough to do front crawl behind someone that is doing the breast stroke because the timing is different. He had enough speed to get past me but really didn't swim faster than me so I ended up stuck behind him for the remainder of the swim. Besides all of my whining, I had a good swim. As soon as I got in the water my stomach cramps went away so it must have been nerves. I felt good and my shoulder held out (it's been giving me a lot of problems for a couple of months now). Transitioned to the bike; I'm not a race for every minute kind of person so I chatted a little to my pool "lane mates" for a minute while I put on my shoes and socks. The bike was interesting - 3km downhill, 3km back up the hill for 4 laps. I felt pretty good but my legs were getting a little tired by the end and my right foot went numb. Transition to the run-switch shoes and grab my water bottle and sunglasses since the sun has come out now. I walked for the first little bit to try and get some feeling back in my right foot. Ran for a few minutes and then walked for a minute. Once I started running after that I felt pretty good. My legs were a little tired but I felt alright. After the first 4km (which was pretty well all downhill but it was out and back so we had to go back up) I walked for a bit, ran for a bit. Once I got to 6km I felt ok but my stomach was empty (I need to fuel up better). Ran it in as hard as I could. Hubby and son were a great support (as always).

I don't have any times yet-I'll add them once they get posted. I feel good about it, but still terrified of GWN.

A week for bailing

The heat threw me off this week.

Wednesday: +31 attempted a 5km run but my partner bailed after 10 minutes of running. I was struggling with the heat, but probably would have kept going if she did. Instead I bailed with her and we walked a few km back.

Thursday: first open water swim of the year! Went out to Hubbles and swam for a while (about 800-900m), at first it was tough adjusting to the wetsuit and having to sight but it got better the longer we were out there. Surprisingly, the water wasn't bad at all. I think Summerside was colder in August.

Friday: swam about 1200m. Lost count after my friends arrived. I have to get in some swims over 2km - I've only done one so far.

Saturday: tried to do the ultraconditioning workout on my stationary bike but I just didn't have any energy. After 10 minutes I just stopped because I couldn't even do push-ups for 30 seconds.

Sunday: time to do yesterdays intended workout. I did it! 1hr10mins of ultraconditioning and an extra 45mins of biking. My legs were tired and I must have lost at 3lbs of sweat but it was a good workout.

Holiday Monday: the plan was to run 16km but it was another hot day and I only had 14km in me today. Took too many walk breaks again but my legs felt pretty good after yesterdays workout. Avg pace 8:33/km. I got a nice sunburn with racoon eyes because of my sunglasses.

Next week is Coronation tri. This will be my longest triathlon so far. This will tell me if I'm in better shape then last year. On all 3 of my tris last year my run was terrible. I just didn't have enough energy and walked quite a bit. My hope is for a stronger run this time around.

This week

Wednesday - ran 5km, another fast run. I was tired and wanted to take it easy but once we started we just kept getting faster. It was a good run but I stopped once I felt sick - guess that's what it feels like to push it (something I never do).

Friday - swam 2km. I'm still really slow in the pool but I think my stroke is improving. It's going to take a lot more work. The last 300m I felt terrible but I was just really determined to swim 2k so I finished it. My shoulder was really hurting! The muscle was tight and just kept getting worse. I'm glad I'm going to see my RMT on Monday, but I'm really not sure what to do to fix this.

Saturday - biked 3 hours. I'm not exactly sure how far I went (I really need to learn how to reset my bike computer). It was around 70km. I felt better today than on my last long ride. Not one episode of just wanting to sit on the side of highway and cry :0)

Sunday - ran 14km. My legs felt tired and it was slow, but the goal today was to just do the distance and I did it! Turns out I have a stomach bug and am not well, which may explain why I was suffering so much.

Tonight I have a massage appointment, hopefully I feel well enough to go.

After the deadline

Once the deadline passed I stopped worrying about the race. Now I'm ok with going out and doing what I can do that day. I think I'm almost too at peace with the idea of not finishing though - I need some drive to finish this race.

My motivation is a new tattoo:

It's half the IM Canada logo. If I finish half the distance I'm going to get a tattoo of half the logo. The goal will be to get it completed when I finish a full ironman.

Training for this week was tough because I've been fighting a sore throat and cold all week (probably not helped with all of the yelling I did at the Oilers vs Detroit game 6!!-it was the game of a lifetime).

Wednesday - ran 6km, felt really strong and had one of best runs ever! Average pace 7:35/km

Thursday - 1 hour of yoga conditioning for athletes dvd. The first time I've done this workout. It's pretty challenging but the next day I could really feel it deep in my abs.

Friday - swimming for an 1.25hrs. Did some more training with my friend - tried flippers and few other drills. It went well and my friend said I've improved :0)

Saturday - skipped biking this week because; the weather was awful, I still wasn't feeling well, and I wanted to spend some time with my son.

Sunday - ran 12km. Another strong run for me.

Monday - ultraconditioning dvd. I love this workout. It's still a challenge but I feel stronger doing it. (oh yeah, a little marble slab treat afterwards)
